Vienna, West Virginia – In 2017 the Ohio Valley University baseball team has already obtained a win total that has the program has not experienced since the 2006 team won the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) championship. This season the Scots are in the midst of a twelve-game winning streak that has pushed their overall record to 24-18. OVU currently holds an 8-8 record in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) which puts them at fifth place in the standings. They sit two games ahead of Cedarville University, and trail Alderson Broaddus and Kentucky Wesleyan College, who are both 9-7 in conference, by just one game. This weekend the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville University come to Bennett Stump Field for a four-game series that will be crucial in securing a berth, and determining seeding in the 2017 G-MAC Baseball Championships. A big part of the Scots' recent success is their offense. They currently have a team batting average of.318 which ranks them second in the conference.
As a team they lead the G-MAC in runs scored (278), hits (431), doubles (83), RBIs (245), walks (159) and on-base percentage (.409). Individually Ohio Valley has six guys hitting over the.300 mark. Senior (Miami Lakes, Florida) leads the way with a.400 average.
Another senior, (Paoli, Pennsylvania) leads the team in run production with 34 RBIs. Their lineup is also aided by the reigning Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) hitter of the week (Macomb, Michigan). The game is not all about offense, and Ohio Valley has turned in their fair share of outstanding pitching performances on the mound. Junior (Wilmington, Ohio) provides some veteran leadership to a staff that is full of young talent. Carey is the reigning G-MAC pitcher of the week, and has not allowed an earned run in his last 16 innings on the mound.
There are several guys that Coach Porter relies on out of the bullpen, but this past week freshman (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) earned ECAC rookie of the week honors for his work in the closers role. He now has a pair of saves, and leads the team with a 3.77 earned run average. 'Cedarville is a well-coached program, and a team who is playing really well inside of our conference,' said Head Coach. 'They are going to come ready to play all weekend long. Our guys need to continue to hit the baseball well, and come prepared to grind it out every inning,' he finished.
